Testimonials

“I would certainly recommend this book to others, as it is filled with good information and has excellent exercises.  It pushes the reader to think through difficult issues and provides an excellent springboard for opening the topic with partners, children and friends.  I would recommend it to the HR Department of businesses and organizations to help their employees face this transition in a constructive manner.”

“There is no doubt in my mind that this book will help the readers more consciously and comprehensively plan their forthcoming retirement or make their current retirement more enjoyable and hopefully more meaningful.”

Burman and Strauss guide readers in fashioning an individualized retirement plan, with an eye on emotional well-being.  The book covers six elemental issues that retirement can throw in one’s lap: money, fitness, home, personal relationships, working/volunteering and leisure. The chapters can be approached as an embracing whole, with the final chapter designed to create an overall action plan. If just one or two of the topics are a concern, the specific chapters stand on their own. Burman and Strauss spell out what readers may expect to encounter in retirement and provide common sense advice on basics like diet and exercise, or resources to tap for medical needs and insurance. The tone throughout is warm and encouraging, and the authors seek to form a bond of “been-there” camaraderie with the reader. There is a genuine sense that Burman and Strauss want readers to understand their strengths and weaknesses, and to that end have designed a series of exercises to measure where they stand in relation to where they wish to be on each issue. The exercises make readers think about their desires and needs honestly, and are chiefly springboards. It is certainly beneficial to know your strengths, yet the weaknesses are what can be most troubling. Burman and Strauss emphasize that retirees will ultimately need to seek professional help (financial, medical or otherwise), and provide the resources necessary to find a qualified individual. Still, the authors give readers the tools to find the bottom line for retirement happiness—know thyself.  A down-to-earth, sensible introduction to retirement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deborah Feldman, CFP, President Leonetti & Associates LLC - Help define what retirement means to you..., August 12, 2009
I have been in the financial planning business since 1983 and over the course of time have read several books on retirement. "Customize don't minimize Your Retirement" is not a run-of-the mill retirement book. This book ranks as one of my favorite top three retirement-planning tools. It contains well thought out, practical information along with thought-provoking, decision-making worksheets. I plan on giving the book to our retirement planning clients to assist them in the process.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great guidebook., July 24, 2009
By  G. Jacobson (Newton, MA.) - (REAL NAME)
This is no one size fits all guide to a fictional retirement. This is a way to help us get to someplace real - and hopefully happy or at least gratified - as we move to changing from the routine of career life to the adventure of a life which we can try to make for ourselves. I find it thoughtful and practical.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must to get for yourself or others, July 22, 2009
By  Sarah Ellsworth (IL) -
This book is an easy to read handbook to get you thinking about retirement. The exercises are easy to use. You can pick from the many topics or concentrate on an area of your concern. The book is thought provoking and a good beginning as a talking point with your spouse, friends or partner. It could also be a great gift for someone you care about who might need a gentle "nudge" towards thinking about their retirement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond Excellent - A Must Read!, October 8, 2009
By  Loretta Polsky(REAL NAME)
I read it and I loved it. As the author of several career books and as a founder of the largest career transition organization worldwide, I found this book superior to any that I have seen in the retirement field. The authors have put forth an excellent guidebook to getting from here to there. It is comprehensive, covering every aspect from finances to visioning to action to hitting the target. The best part of this book is its easy step-by-step approach. Whether retirement is near or far or right now, CUSTOMIZE...DON'T MINIMIZE...YOUR RETIREMENT is a must read. 5.0 out of 5 stars makes a great gift, September 24, 2009

I gave the book as a gift to my parents and they were very grateful. My mother really loved it because she didn't know how to raise a number of the issues surrounding their retirement with my Dad. But due to the comprehensive nature of the exercises in the book they were able to have very meaningful discussions and my mother was relieved and reassured. Since my father has been ill lately, these in-depth conversations have become even more important and timely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, thorough and extremeley useful!, September 18, 2009
By  Marie Kisiel (Winfield, IL) -
"Customize,,,don't minimize...Your Retirement" is truly a book that lives up to its title and the goals of its authors. It helps the reader to think seriously about the issues all of us face going into retirement and the ramifications of the choices we make, not only for ourselves but for our loved ones.

It is well-orangized, provides useful resources, and engages the reader immediately. It presents options and guides the reader, through carefully designed exercises, to explore the many possibilities retirement holds...if we are prepared.

Family and friends would greatly benefit from reading this book. It is clearly written with valuable insights and observations. I would highly recommend it to
individuals facing retirement and to professionals who work with them.

It would also be a great gift for all family members!

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Flexible Process and Tools for Retirement Planning, September 17, 2009
By  Donald L. Double (Westmont, IL., USA) -
(REAL NAME)
This is one of the few retirement planning books that is both comprehensive and flexible. We were able to quickly understand the retirement planning challenges we have by completing exercises that point out these gaps. Then we focused on those challenges skipping over what was less relevant. The authors generated well designed exercises that helped us plan our strategy. They also offer one of the most comprehensive resource lists to be found on this important topic.

The book introduces the first time planner to the basics while it also provides sophisticated tools for the more experienced in retirement planning. This is the best guide on this topic to be generated in years.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Ease on down the road to Retirement" -a do-it-right guide, September 15, 2009
By  Susan Berger "Susan Berger, Esq." (Boston, MA) -
I've worked with directly with people facing career entry or change for a number of years. Looking ahead to retirement is no different from any life/work changing event. It's easy to ignore and hard to do unless you have guidance which motivates you.

"Customize Your Retirement" does just that! I've often found self-help books difficult to wade through, but here, despite the size healthy size of this guidebook, you'll find it easy to choose and to do the exercises included.

Of all the self-help books I've viewed this is the most fun, palatable, and interesting. It provides a real opportunity to explore in the privacy of your home your real driving interests and motivators. You can even share this with friends and work together. All the more fun.
